The Encounter

By: Saffron (c) 1999

I woke up fairly early... actually...I only opened my eyes. I didn't really sleep. I dreamt about her again. All that triggered it was a smile. One of her heart-melting smiles. I inhaled deeply. Why, of all people, did I have a crush on my captain? But at the same time, who could blame me? Kathryn Janeway was a formidable woman--beautiful, enchanting, and commanding.

I don't know how long I lay there thinking and I don't know what snapped me out of my haze of thoughts. I glanced at the clock. Damn it! I was late again. The commander will have my head this time. My chronic tardiness has become a problem and I can't seem to get back on track.

I spent 2 seconds in the sonic shower, quickly dressed and hurried out the door. If only I had been looking where I was going. I ran smack dab into someone. I stood up quickly and reached a hand out to...Captain Janeway. I couldn't have been more mortified... or speechless. I stared at her, my mouth imitating a big-mouthed bass... opening, closing and no words coming out.

She chuckled as she took my hand. Somehow I gripped her hand and pulled her up, not failing to notice the softness and warmth of it. It sent shivers up my arm. As soon as she was steady, I pulled my hand away as if on fire. I finally got my tongue to work and apologized profusely. She held her hand up as if to say it was ok then dusted herself off.

I found myself staring at her. I couldn't help myself. She seemed to be moving in slow motion, her hand brushing the dust off her uniform then tucking her hair behind her ears. Suddenly she was looking at me but I couldn't tear my eyes away. She smiled and asked if I was ok. Her eyes actually met mine. All I could do was nod. She patted me on the shoulder and went on her way. I watch in appreciation as she moved away, my love for her filling up my heart and spilling over like a waterfall.

Suddenly, it didn't matter that I was late. I slowly turned on my heel and went to face the commander. I could tell that the smile on my face would be there for a while.
