Kathryn watched Chakotay as he ate. She studied his features as though she'd never seen him before. Recent events had made her rethink a lot of things about her life... mostly about him. Voyager would be home in 9 months. They had taken a chance on an unstable wormhole and gotten lucky.
But it made Kathryn restless. For so long, her goal had been to get home. Now they were almost there. This new development freed up her mind for other thoughts and ideas.
She refocused on the present when she saw Chakotay staring back at her. He smiled then took a drink.
"Will you marry me," she asked quietly.
Chakotay made a horrible choking sound and his eyes grew big. "What?" he whispered in disbelief.
Kathryn calmly repeated her question.
Chakotay put his glass down and scrutinized Kathryn's face. "You're serious." It was more of a statement than a question, but Kathryn nodded anyway.
A smug look came over Chakotay's face. "I don't know. I think I need to think about this."
Kathryn's napkin hit him in the face and fell in his lap. The smile faded from his mouth as his dark eyes held her gaze. "I thought you'd never ask." Chakotay reached across the table and took her hand. He brought it to his lips and gently kissed her fingers. "Yes, Kathryn, I will marry you."
